Understanding GSM is an important part of choosing the right fabric for custom apparel. At Wearpal Apparel, we help brands select the appropriate fabric weight based on garment type, comfort, durability, season, and intended use.
GSM stands for Grams per Square Meter. It indicates the weight and density of a fabric and is one of the most commonly used measurements in apparel manufacturing.
GSM means Grams per Square Meter. It measures how much one square meter of fabric weighs in grams.
For example, a fabric rated at 180 GSM weighs approximately 180 grams per square meter. A 300 GSM fabric is generally heavier and denser than a 180 GSM fabric.
GSM does not directly determine fabric quality. Instead, it helps you understand the fabric's approximate weight, thickness, coverage, structure, and suitability for different garments.
A standard measurement used to describe the weight of fabric.
Different GSM levels are suitable for different apparel products, climates, styles, and performance requirements.
Lightweight and breathable fabrics commonly used for warm weather garments and certain performance applications.
A popular range for comfortable everyday apparel where breathability and versatility are important.
A versatile range offering a balance between comfort, structure, durability, and everyday wearability.
Heavier fabrics provide more structure and are often selected for premium and durable apparel.
Extra-heavy materials are suitable for structured garments, outerwear, heavyweight hoodies, and selected winter products.
Lightweight GSM fabrics are often preferred for hot climates, while higher GSM materials can provide additional warmth.
The ideal GSM depends on whether you are producing T-shirts, polos, hoodies, sportswear, workwear, or other garments.
Lower GSM can provide a lighter feel, while higher GSM can create a more substantial and structured garment.
Fabric construction, fiber type, finishing, and GSM can all influence the durability and performance of the final garment.
Cotton, polyester, blends, spandex, and other fibers can behave differently even when fabrics have a similar GSM.
Consider whether the garment is intended for fashion, fitness, sports, workwear, promotional use, or everyday wear.
Not necessarily. A higher GSM means that the fabric is heavier per square meter, but it does not automatically mean the fabric is better quality.
Fabric quality depends on several factors, including fiber quality, yarn construction, knitting or weaving, finishing, fabric composition, colorfastness, shrinkage, and manufacturing standards.
Choosing the correct fabric weight can make a significant difference to the comfort, appearance, performance, and overall feel of your finished garments. Our team can help you select suitable fabric options according to your product requirements.
